Carlene Carter - Country Music

Carlene Carter couldn't help but grow up on country music. Born to June Carter and Carl Smith, her parents divorced when she was small. Her mother married Johnny Cash when Carlene was 12, and Carlene and her stepsister Roseanne Cash became backup singers for the Carter/Cash show. By the time she was 21, Carlene had two children and had been divorced twice.

Carlene always had a fondness for rock music, so in 1978 when she secured her own recording contract, she was cutting rock and roll and country rock albums.

Living in England with her third husband, rock star Nick Lowe, Carlene wasn't involved in her family's country music.

It wasn't until the mid-80's when her marriage with Lowe ended, that she returned to the United States and joined the Carter Family tour. In 1990, she released her fifth album, I Fell In Love, which was more country than rock and hit the charts with two No. 3 hits, the title track and "Come on Back". She again made the charts with No. 3 "Every Little Thing" in 1993.

Carlene's music career began in 1976 when she recorded for the first time with Johnny Cash on his album "The Junkie and the Juicehead, Minus Me", and has gone from country to rock, to a unique mixture of the two as she continues her career.
