Gatlin Brothers - Country Music
The trio of brothers, Larry, Steve, and Rudy, comprise the Gatlin Brothers, one of the most famous groups in country history. They began performing as children and even cut a religious album in their teens. Larry enrolled at the University of Houston, where he joined a gospel group called The Imperials. Dottie West heard the Imperials in a Las Vegas show and was impressed by Larry. She recorded two of his songs and payed for him to move to Nashville.
Dottie brought Larry to the attention of Monument Records, and Larry was offered a contract. Bringing his brothers to Nashville to perform backup, the group was known as Larry Gatlin with Family and Friends. The brothers' vocals and harmonies produced songs that broke into the charts in the mid to late 70's, including "Broken Lady" and "I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love", their first number one hit. In 1979, they signed to Columbia Records, about the same time that the brothers backing Larry changed their name to The Gatlin Brothers.
Their first number one hit under their new name was "All the Gold in California". The 80's brought the group 15 Top 40 hits, including "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)". Although they were commonly known as the Gatlin Brothers, their recordings were made under a variety of names; among them Larry & the Gatlin Brothers Band, Larry & the Gatlin Brothers, and Larry, Steve, Rudy: The Gatlin Brothers. The trio retired in 1991 and opened a theater in Branson, Missouri.
