Country Music - George Canyon
Born Fred George Lays in Nova Scotia Canada, George Canyon joined the Air Cadets at the age of 12, only to find he was diabetic at 14, thus unable to fly. Turning his direction to pre-med school, he auditioned at St. Francis Xavier University for a role in Camelot and got the role of King Arthur. A country rock band heard him, and he joined their band. When that gig was over, he worked for free as an auxiliary constable, eventually becoming a police officer, got married, and had two children, while playing solo in clubs at night. Before every performance, he would watch a video of George Strait, identifying with and being inspired by him. Canyon performed the opening act for Brooks and Dunn and Loretta Lynn before he was asked to audition for Nashville Star in 2003. Placing second in Nashville Star, he caught the attention of Tony Brown and Tim DuBois at Universal South and landed a recording contract. His debut album "One Good Friend" was released in 2004. When he's not on the music circuit, Canyon is a spokesperson for diabetes and continues to deliver the message that diabetes should not be an obstacle for anyone.
