Jimmy Fortune - Country Music
One of nine children, Jimmy Fortune was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, on March 11, 1955. His father played mandolin at square dances, and Jimmy joined in playing the guitar at an early age. He began playing in bands when he was a teenager and continued his music at night while working full time.
Singing at a local ski resort with some friends in 1981, Lew DeWitt of the Statler Brothers listened to Fortune sing and the doors opened for his music career. A couple months later, the Statler Brothers contacted Fortune to replace DeWitt who was having surgery and was taking a leave of absence.
Although Fortune had laryngitis at the time, he auditioned for the part. He was awarded the job as a temporary member of the Statler Brothers in January, 1982.
Six months later, Lew DeWitt was still not healthy enough to return, and Fortune was made a full-time member of the group. Jimmy Fortune spent the next 21 years as a part of the legendary group, singing hits such as "Elizabeth", "Too Much On My Heart", and "More Than a Name on a Wall", while earning numerous awards for Singer and Songwriter of the Year, as well as Country Music Video of the Year for Elizabeth in 1985.
