Johnny Cash - Country Music

Having one of the most distinguishable voices in country, folk and gospel music history, the name Johnny Cash is an icon. Known as the Man in Black, Cash was born to Ray and Carrie Rivers Cash on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas. He worked alongside his family in the cotton fields until 1950, when he found work in an automotive plant in Pontiac, Michigan. Shortly after he joined the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed in Germany, where he started his first band. Returning to the states, he got his first recording contract in 1954.

With his second album, he made Billboard Top 10 with "Folsom Prison Blues". Johnny's fourth chart single "I Walk the Line" was his first No. 1 hit and immediately became his signature song. "I Walk the Line" stayed on the charts for an unbelievable 43 weeks. His career continued to climb with other hits like "Ring of Fire" and "Understand Your Man".

His grueling schedule took a toll and by the mid-60's, Cash was divorcing his first wife, Vivian Liberto, and fighting an addiction to narcotics. He overcame the addiction with the help of June Carter, his singing partner, who he married in 1968. Live performances at Folsom Prison and San Quentin won Johnny CMA's Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist awards.

From 1969 to 1971, Cash hosted the Johnny Cash Show, appearing on many television shows for years afterward. He joined stars Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings in the group, The Highwaymen, in 1985. Their song, "The Highwayman" ranked a number one spot on the charts.

Among a myriad of awards, Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, in 1980, as well as The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. His wife, June Carter Cash, died in May 2003. Cash lost his life due to complications from diabetes on September 12, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. A movie about their life together, entitled "Walk the Line" was a box office hit in 2005.
